Amdel History

Amdel was constituted in January of 1960 as a combined act between the Commonwealth of Australia, the State Government of South Australia and private industry using the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Limited (AMIRA) as a vehicle.

Since inception, Amdel became synonymous with high quality laboratory data testing and service.

The business was initially created to include analytical chemistry laboratory testing for the minerals and mining industry, mineralogy, petrology and mineral processing.

Through the early 1970's and 80's Amdel significantly expanded the services it offered in the market (including the provision of high quality in-stream analysis equipment, and other on line measuring devices). This allowed the business to set up facility sites and operations in other states within Australia.

In 1987, due to the pressures of running what had become a highly proficient organisation, the Government bodies allowed Amdel to become a privately owned company with no government interaction at either board or financial level.

Since this change Amdel Limited became a commercial entity. This allowed Amdel Limited to branch into other fields of endeavour, which in time included the provision of services to the environmental, agricultural and pharmaceutical industries.

Continuing to expand, the 1990's saw developments in centralising the minerals division and importantly the expansion into non-minerals operations. This saw future growth into further markets and in turn saw the acquisition of food testing laboratories in New Zealand, now known as NZLABS and further site developments interstate including new Environmental Laboratories.

In 1999 Amdel Limited sold its manufacturing arm to concentrate on its core business of laboratory testing and services.

In 2002 Gribbles Pathology bought the Amdel Group of Laboratories, then in 2004 Healthscope took over Gribbles. In December 2005, senior management led a management buyout with the financial assistance of Champ Ventures that resulted in Amdel Limited ending its relationship with Healthscope allowing the company to enter an exciting new phase.

Since the management buy-out, Amdel Limited has been laying solid foundations for growth. In late 2006 Amdel opened additional operations at Wingfield in South Australia. Then in 2007 Amdel opened its newest mineral laboratory site located in Mt Isa and also acquired two Western Australian companies. In 2007 Amdel acquired both Independent Metallurgical Laboratories (IML) and Ultra Trace. IML a provider of Metallurgical services was acquired in April of 2007 while Ultra Trace, the largest provider of geoanalytical testing services in Australia was acquired on the 31 August 2007.

By late 2007, Amdel employed over 1100 staff Amdel Limited. 2007 was a highly successful year seeing a number of initiatives and investments made. CEO, Steve McAllister is of the strong opinion that 'people are the best asset of our business' and invested heavily to ensure the company had the best personnel on board to assist in the future strategic directions of Amdel Limited moving forward.

In May 2008, Amdel Limited was acquired by the Bureau Veritas Group.
